Community Activator Coach – Level 2 Apprenticeship (Community Trust)

Wigan Athletic Community Trust is excited to offer an excellent opportunity to begin your career in community sport, health and wellbeing. We are recruiting a Community Activator Coach Level 2 Apprentice to join our Health Team and play an important role in supporting local people to lead healthier, more active lives.

Working at the heart of communities across the Wigan borough, you will help inspire individuals, families and groups to get active, build confidence and enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of regular activity. You will support people who may be inactive, face barriers to taking part, or need positive encouragement to take their first steps into physical activity.

This apprenticeship blends hands‑on community coaching with structured learning through the Coach Core Training Programme, including 6 hours of dedicated weekly study time.
It is a perfect starting point for anyone passionate about making a positive difference through physical activity, health and community development.

This role requires empathy, energy, and enthusiasm, with the ability to engage and motivate people of varying ages and abilities.

 

Salary: Apprentice wage for the first 12 months, increasing to minimum wage last 3 months

 - Under 18 (£8/HR) 18 - 20 (£10.85/HR)

 

Type of contract: 15 month Contract - 35 Hours/week (6 hours weekly study time)

 

You will:

As part of our vibrant Health team, your work will help children, adults, families and community groups to become more active, improve their wellbeing and feel more connected in their community. You will enjoy a varied, hands‑on role where you will.

Community Delivery

  • Lead and deliver inclusive community‑based physical activity and sport sessions tailored to local needs.
  • Create safe, welcoming and motivating environments using effective coaching principles.
  • Support people with low confidence or low activity levels by using simple behaviour‑change approaches.

·         Facilitate fun, family‑friendly activities that help households be active together.

  • Build rapport and positive relationships with participants, families and young people.
  • Act as an enthusiastic role model, promoting healthier lifestyles and active routines.
  • Work collaboratively with youth workers, health teams, community groups, volunteers and local sports clubs.
  • Support and contribute to community events, helping to plan and deliver activity opportunities.
  • Prepare resources, equipment and session plans of delivery.
  • Record attendance, collect feedback and help evaluate and improve programmes.
  • Use social media and digital tools to promote activities and share positive stories.
  • Capture basic qualitative and quantitative data, including case studies.
  • Represent the Trust and Wigan Athletic on local networks, promoting the power of football to impact communities.
  • Balance delivery responsibilities with 6 hours weekly study time.

You will be:

  • Passionate about physical activity, health, wellbeing or community development.
  • Enthusiastic, positive and comfortable engaging with people of all ages.
  • Willing to work outdoors in all weather and deliver active, hands‑on sessions.
  • Flexible to work some evenings and weekends to meet community need.
  • Able to travel between community venues.
  • Curious, reflective and open to ongoing learning and development.

Desirable:

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
  • GCSE Maths and English (or willingness to work toward Functional Skills during apprenticeship).
  • Some experience supporting others in sport, health or community settings (not essential).
