Reports to: Head of Sport Science
Location: Bloomfield Road, Blackpool/Squires Gate Training Ground
Hours: 40 per week – To include weekends and away game travel
Salary: Dependant on Experience


Who we are:

Blackpool Football Club is an English Professional Association Football Club based in the
seaside town of Blackpool, Lancashire.

The Club was founded in 1887 and has a very storied history, from being a founding
member of the Lancashire League in 1889, rising to the Top-Flight of the Football League
(the old First Division) in 1930, to winning the FA Cup in 1953 and being promoted to the
Premier League in 2010 (becoming the first Club to gain promotion from every division of
the Football League via the play-off system).

The team are competing in League One, the third tier of the English Football League.

The Club have played their home games at Bloomfield Road since 1901.


Job Purpose:

As a First Team Sport Scientist, you will be within the multidisciplinary Sport Science and
Medical Department, dedicated to delivering evidence-based sport science practice across a
comprehensive programme to all first team players in line with the Club’s physical
philosophy, to enhance physical performance.

The position is full-time, with working hours being flexible around the needs of the Club and
include evening and weekend work, overnight travel to games, and special events as
required.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in elite football or high-performance sport, with
a background in physical performance testing, load management, physical profiling, and
Strength and Conditioning periodisation and prescription. The candidate will be expected to
undertake any specific training or Continued Professional Development to maintain up-todate knowledge and qualifications, and / or as organised by the Club.

 

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

• To assist with delivering a Sport Science (SS) programme that reflects best practice
and scientific principles in order to maximise performance, in line with the clubs
physical philosophy.
• To assist with the planning, delivery, and reviewing of SS training protocols, including
but not limited to; GPS load management, hydration, nutrition and supplement
provisions, gym-based S&C prescription, conditioning based sessions, rehab-based
session, and recovery sessions.
• Collect, analyse, and interpret physical daily training and match GPS data.
• Collect, analyse, and interpret S&C daily physical testing.
• To assist in the maintenance of Player Monitoring Analytics (Catapult GPS, VALD
Physical Testing, Heart Rate, Excel, Power Bi).
• Develop and maintain the Club’s SS Performance Management system on a daily
basis.
• Support or lead the delivery of grass-based sessions including warmups, conditioning
sessions, and specific physical performance training.
• Support or lead the planning, prescription, and delivery of S&C based gym sessions
including exercise prescription, individual programming, and player profiling to
maximise performance.
• Support or lead the monitoring of individual load management, physical testing, and
KPIs to contribute to performance profiling.
• Provide technical coaching support in SS, broadening the Clubs knowledge and
understanding of SS practice in a professional football Club.
• Provide SS support to all First Team players on training and match days, both home
and away.
• Provide SS support to the rehabilitation process in line with the requirements of the
Club’s Medical department including S&C and pitch-based exercise prescription and
delivery.
• Arrange and provide top up sessions for players not in the match day squad.
• Support the Player education process and provide updates on player progress as
required.
• Engage with and support both personal and departmental continuous professional
development.
• Assist with the SS Research and Development programme to enhance understanding
and answer performance questions related to the physical development of all First
Team players. 

• To provide full match day SS support including setting up and packing down, and any
pre/post game physical work with players.
• Work within the rules of professional confidentiality and follow the BASES and/or
UKSCA code of conduct, standards and guidelines.
• Promote drug-free sport and have a working knowledge of The WADA Code.
• Assist in the management, maintenance, and development of the SS equipment and
facilities at the Club.
• To adhere to the Club’s Safeguarding Policy at all times.
• To promote a safe and healthy working environment for all players and staff.
• To promote a professional image of the Club and themselves at all times.
• To contribute to identifying and undertaking initiatives aimed at improving the
efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery.
• To work with and support other team members as required ensuring effective and
efficient service is developed and delivered.
• You will be expected to seek ways of updating and improving personal skills,
knowledge and understanding relevant to your own job role.
• Additional duties as reasonably requested by the Head of Sport Science.
