Overview of the United Soccer League (USL)
The United Soccer League (USL) is the largest and fastest-growing professional soccer organization in North America, possessing more than a decade of experience in bringing the world’s game to communities across the United States and Canada. Overseeing the USL Championship (USSF Division II), USL League One (USSF Division III), and USL League Two (Pre-Professional), the organization is built on a proven and recognized model in international football and counts more than 125 clubs in its membership.

 Based in Tampa, Fla., the USL has grown during the past decade into a model organization with strong corporate partnerships and stable organizational leadership. It features a dedicated staff of more than 60 professionals across 15 departments ranging from operations, digital, communications and club services, each of which provides unparalleled support to member clubs and outside partners. Sanctioned by the U.S. Soccer Federation, the USL is #UnitedForSoccer, moving the game forward in North America. 
 
Position Purpose
USL HQ is looking for the right, qualified candidate to serve as the league’s primary contact for non-sports media and to generate and execute a year-round media relations strategy for USL business initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience in corporate communications, experience in business media relations, executive communications, scheduling, television media, as well as a proven track record of success with social media and public relations campaign management. 
 
The right candidate will be extremely proactive, confident, bold, and equipped with strong inter-personal communications skills as well as having high levels of professionalism and emotional intelligence. 

Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Generate year-round media relations strategy for USL HQ corporate initiatives.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for all business, and sports business industry outlets.
  • Proactively source media coverage of USL business initiatives and projects. 
  • Proactively source and serve as primary contact and scheduler for USL HQ executive conference appearances and speaking engagements.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for all USL stadium development projects. 
  • Provide public relations assistance in crisis situations.
  • Develop close contacts in both prospective and existing USL communities. 
  • Write and disseminate media alerts and news releases to promote USL HQ corporate initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain meaningful connectedness to the USL community, keeping a pulse on local trends, news, and events of relevance.
  • Partner directly with the social media department to coordinate messaging and corporate public relations initiatives.
  • Monitor social media mentions and national or international stories regarding the organization and decisively influence the organization's media presence and portrayal.
  • Oversee quality control of publications and written materials across all departments of the business office.
  • Compiling news clippings and disseminating them to all staff.
  • Writing website articles covering USL HQ’s community initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:
  • BA/BS or equivalent is required in Communications, Journalism, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years related experience in Public Relations or Communications.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in corporate and/or business media preferred.
  • Must be willing and able to consistently source and produce coverage and 'buzz' surrounding USL business initiatives and projects. 
  • Computer proficiency in a variety of applications. 
  • Nurture, develop, and maintain strong relationships with business media outlets.
  • Strong planning skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Work comfortably in a variety of audiences including professional athletes, press, fans, community leaders, executives and peers.
  • Highly developed communication skills, including ability to write reports, business correspondence and effectively present information to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Strategic and critical thinker who is dynamic, forward thinking, extremely analytical and well organized.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and use upmost discretion when privy to sensitive information.
  • Ability to demonstrate uncompromised judgment and discretion with regard to interpersonal relationships.
  • Self-confident, resilient and possess a high energy level and enthusiasm.
  • Strong communicative modes (verbal, non-verbal, and written) and being attuned to others through active listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong sense of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic a must.
  • Ability to work as business needs require which may include long days, evenings, weekends, occasional holidays, and travel if / when necessary.
  • Must have U.S. work authorization.
