Job Description

Philadelphia was awarded the 16th Major League Soccer franchise in February, 2008 and the team was officially announced as the Philadelphia Union in May, 2009.  Owned and operated by Keystone Sports and Entertainment LLC (“KSE”), the group launched the Philadelphia Union's inaugural season in 2010 and opened what is now Subaru Park in June, 2010.  Subaru Park is an 18,500 seat, world-class soccer specific stadium that sits beautifully along the Delaware River at the base of the Commodore Barry Bridge and is only 15 miles from downtown Philadelphia.  

The club has reached the finals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2014, 2015 and 2018, and has appeared in the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, securing their first showing in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2021.  In 2020, the Union were awarded the club’s first Supporters’ Shield after finishing with the best regular season record in MLS.  The club hosted the Eastern Conference Final in 2021 and were named the Eastern Conference Champions in 2022.  The 2022 season finished at the MLS Cup against LAFC, in one of the most intense matches in League history!  The Philadelphia Union have once again clinched a berth in the 2023 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.

The Individual Development Plan (“IDP”) and Transition Coach is a new and innovative role within our structure. Reporting to the Director of Academy and Professional Development, this individual will have the ability to work as a Coach across our professional player pathway from the U-15 Team to 1st Team. This individual will therefore conduct small group sessions and individualized training for our high potential players.

  • Act as a Coach within the professional player pathway as directed by the Director of Academy and Professional Development.
  • Prepare, develop, and implement individual development plans for high potential academy and professional players progressing up our professional player pathway.
  • Liaise with the 1st team and 2nd team staff regarding player transition.
  • Analyze video and live performances of individual players.
  • Provide individual video and training sessions in person and remotely.
  • Manage part-time IDP coaches and mentors.
  • Prepare and lead presentations on individual development training (theory and practice) and transition up the professional player pathway to educate coaches and staff members.
  • Empower players in the pro-pathway to own their development program and make decisions regarding it.
  • Develop positive relationships with the parents of the high potential players and be available to provide feedback regarding their performance.
  • Consult and collaborate with the Sports Science and Performance Department of the Club to make personal fitness programs, dietary plans and discuss injury reports.
  • Report and discuss talent in the professional player pathway with the Club's Scouting Department.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Club's methodology.
  • Assist with coaching other teams in the Academy Program or other Teams as directed by the Director of Academy and Professional Development.
  • Coach and/or assist with coaching other Club programs, including, but not limited to, player development programs, camps, functional training programs and/or all other soccer programs.
  • Such other duties and services as may reasonably be assigned by the Club to Employee that are consistent with employment as a coach in the Academy Program.

  • UEFA/USSF A License or Equivalent (working towards license will also be considered).
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a coach within professional (youth) soccer.
  • Proven knowledge and experience of developing young athletes at elite level.
  • Knowledge of the American soccer system.
  • Highly organized and process-driven individual, with ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment.
  • Desirable experience as a professional or semi-professional soccer player and/or a pedagogic background.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Good team player.
  • Ability to work long hours, weekends, and/or holidays.
