Job Description

Wigan Athletic Football Club is looking to recruit a First Team Physio. You will deliver a high standard of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to all professional players whilst coordinating and supporting the physiotherapist staff, including the academy.

The successful candidate will report directly to the Head of Physiotherapy.

Working hours: 37.5 hours a week to be worked flexibly in line with business needs.

Contract type: Permanent

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide physiotherapy support primarily to the First Team squad, including assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal; implementation of appropriate treatment and rehabilitation strategies; pre-training management of players, including strapping, taping and administration of treatment as required.
  • Provide physiotherapy cover and support to the U23 squad, based with the first team, including assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal; implementation of appropriate treatment and rehabilitation strategies; pre-training management of players including strapping, taping and administration of treatment as required.
  • Provide support & oversee the development, coordination and implementation of all medical musculoskeletal matters.
  • To liaise closely with the Club Doctor, Head Physio, Sports Scientists and other members of the team to optimise player medical care and performance with all medical/health-related matters for all professional players.
  • Provide evidence-based treatment and develop injury rehabilitation guidelines.
  • Accompany players to medical consultations, possibly at short notice, ensuring the player receives optimal care and advice at all times.
  • Organise and coordinate all necessary investigations (e.g., MRI, X-ray), appointments, and specialist treatments/procedures.
  • To be involved in the counselling process of all first-team players covering medical/health-related matters.
  • Responsible for the continued running of injury reduction strategies in line with the club's ‘Injury Reduction Pyramid’ (including, pre-signing player recruitment screening, load monitoring, athletic & movement development programmes and structured & individualised injury reduction programmes).
  • Liaise effectively with the First Team coaching staff daily to keep them informed of players’ availability for matches and training.
  • Educate players on responsible management of injuries and injury prevention strategies.
  • Provide Physiotherapy match day cover for all First Team games.
  • Provide ‘on-field’ first aid to injured players and aid in their removal and dispatch to appropriate facility.
  • Responsible for the organisation of First Team's Matchday Emergency Action in accordance with the Football Association guidelines.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL:

Qualifications:

  • A qualification at degree level in Physiotherapy.
  • Registration with CSP and HCPC.
  • Valid ATMMiF course.
  • A full UK Driving Licence.

Experience:

  • Experience working in a professional football club environment.
  • Knowledge and experience of strength and conditioning requirements of the elite footballer.

Knowledge Skills & Qualities:

  • Excellent leadership & communication skills
  • Professional, reliable, and flexible approach to work.
  • Demonstrate good levels of I.T. literacy, in particular the use of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, and shared file systems (e.g. Dropbox).
  • Possess the coaching and communication skills that engage and motivate a diverse range of players.
  • Keen interest in rehabilitation and treatment of injuries & sport
  • Ability to encourage & motivate players with rehabilitation & injury prevention programmes.
  • An enthusiastic attitude
  • The ability to work well in a team and on your own.
  • Ability to travel.

Due to the nature of the role, applicants must be aged over 18 years.

The role will require an enhanced DBS, which will be paid for by the employer.
