Job Description

Reporting organisationally to the Chief Strategy & Planning Officer, the Director of Sustainability & Human Rights will be a key member of the FIFA26 Sustainability & Human Rights team, and work in close collaboration with the FIFA Zurich Sustainability team and other key individuals responsible for delivering for leading and managing the Sustainability & Human Rights team and project which expands over FIFA´s environmental, human rights and safeguarding work for the FIFA World Cup 26 across all three Hosting Countries of Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. The project is based on the delivery of the FIFA26 Sustainability & Human Rights Strategy.

Further, the Director of Sustainability & Human Rights oversees the relationships between the FWC26 Inc. locally in Miami and the FIFA Sustainability & Human Rights team remotely in Zurich, Switzerland as well as with the sustainability and human rights-related representatives in the 16 Host Cities and stadiums in the FIFA Mexico and FIFA Canada offices. The Director will be expected to collaborate cross-functionally across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

The main responsibilities and oversights of the Director of Sustainability & Human Rights for the FIFA World Cup 26™ include: 
  • Represents the Sustainability & Human Rights Functional Area locally; 
  • Manages the FIFA World Cup Sustainability & Human Rights Team based in Miami, United States of America as well as Toronto, Canada and Mexico City, Mexico;
  • Oversees the delivery of the FIFA World Cup 26 Sustainability & Human Rights Strategy by the local team, in close cooperation with the FIFA Sustainability & Environment, Safeguarding & Child Protection, and Human Rights & Anti-Discrimination teams in Zurich as well as with the Senior Sustainability Manager who acts as the FIFA World Cup 26 Sustainability & Human Rights project coordinator for those three teams in Zurich;
  • Oversees and further develops the sustainability event management system (SEMS) for the tournament;
  • Ensures productive working relationships and synergies with all the relevant stakeholders such as other FIFA functional areas, government entities, FIFA’s Commercial Affiliates, multilateral development institutions, NGOs and local communities;
  • Oversees the development of and integration of environmental and social criteria and standards into tournament policies, processes, procedures, guidelines and other tools across FWC26 Inc. by the Sustainability & Human Rights team;
  • Is responsible for environmental and social related communication in liaison FIFA Sustainability & Environment, Safeguarding & Child Protection, and Human Rights & Anti-Discrimination teams in Zurich as well as with the Senior Sustainability Manager who acts as the FIFA World Cup 26 Sustainability & Human Rights project coordinator for those three teams in Zurich;
  • Assists in planning and coordinating of meetings, workshops and site visits; 
  • Coordinates the delivery of the tournament´s Sustainability Reporting throughout the project.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in one of the following: sustainability, environmental studies, social sciences, human rights and social development or similar field
  • Post-graduate degree(s) for the above areas is an asset
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in management of complex, multi-stakeholder environmental and social sustainability projects, with at least three years of experience in the United States and preferably also in Canada and Mexico;
  • Familiarity with and/or experience in working within the frameworks of sustainability event management systems such as ISO 20121 (Event Sustainability Management Systems – Requirements with guidance for use);
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in working with international standards and conventions such as the AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – Sports for Climate Action Framework, GHG Protocol, UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), International Safeguards for Children in Sport, IOC Framework for safeguarding athletes and other participants from harassment and abuse in sport (Games time period), Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism, ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work;  
  • Experience in reporting against international standards such as Global Reporting Initiative sustainability reporting standards;
  • Experience in managing a multi-cultural team and in working across countries remotely;
  • Proven track-record in fostering, building and maintaining relationships with bodies of experts and/or stakeholders;
  • Experience in integrating environmental and social requirements in processes and procedures across an organisation´s business;
  • Experience in managing budgets and basic financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in the fields of environment and social sustainability with Host Cities;
  • Experience working in the field of sports and events and, in particular, mega sporting events;
  • Experience working with local governments and other governmental actors in the field of environment and social development in the Host Countries;
  • Experience in collaborating with commercial sponsors on environmental and social topics.
