Job Description

Football Radar have been successfully developing statistical models and analytical frameworks for football for over 10 years. We provide advice to football clubs, and we are also a leading provider of betting advice, where we have helped our clients achieve outstanding returns for over 10 years. We see ourselves as an interesting mix of start-up and established business, with the flexibility of the former and the security of the latter.

The role

We are looking for a technically capable and strategically minded candidate to lead our small software engineering team. You will provide leadership and direction to the team, and take ownership of the hiring, training and development of our engineers to make sure they are happy in their work and performing at a high level. As a member of our senior management team, you will also play an important strategic role, helping us to decide where to focus our efforts and which projects to run in order to deliver the most value for the business.

This role would suit either an experienced software manager, who is looking for a new opportunity at a small, start-up like company; or a strong and ambitious candidate who is perhaps in more of a team lead role currently, but who is looking to take on a more strategic role as the next step in their career.

This role is based at our London office, at 1 Craven Hill, London, W2 3EN. You will have flexibility to work from home one day a week, and we aren't too fussy about the exact hours you work each day. But please note we are not considering remote candidates at the moment.

Requirements

We are first and foremost a football company, and to have a big impact here, it will also help if you have domain expertise – you will probably be a big football fan, and ideally someone who is comfortable with the mathematical and statistical approaches we are applying to the game. If you have any experience with sports betting or football analytics that is a bonus.

You should have prior experience of managing software development teams and providing a link between them and other parts of the business. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential, and you should also be passionate about building a successful team and helping those in it realise their full potential.

You will also need a strong technical background. Most of our backend code is built in Scala, with a little C++, Python and PHP scattered around too.  Our frontends use modern JS frameworks and tooling, including React and TypeScript. We run most of our software in AWS, deployed via Docker and Kubernetes. It’s a bonus if you have experience with any of these languages or technologies – particularly Scala, which will enable you to jump into the majority of our codebase very quickly – but experience in our specific tech stack isn’t essential. You will however need a broad understanding of the modern software landscape, and experience with a variety of web technologies is essential - in particular you will need experience working with microservices and designing and maintaining distributed systems.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary that is reviewed regularly, with an annual bonus option
  • 33 days holiday (includes bank holidays)
  • Competitive contribution match pensions
  • Paid learning and development opportunities
  • Fully subsidised private medical insurance + on-site health checks
  • Subsidised office meals
  • Subsidised gym membership
