Job Description

Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics, the Head Men’s Soccer Coach will recruit qualified student-athletes for the program, instruct and develop the student-athlete in the sport of men’s soccer, game preparation, and community involvement. Instruction should include, but not be limited to, the rules, techniques and strategies relating to practice and competition in this sport. The Head Coach provides administrative support to the College’s NCAA Division III program. The Head Coach will also support the mission and goals of the Athletic Department. The Study Hall Coordinator will be responsible for directing study hall for all first-year student-athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Head Men’s Soccer Coach

Coaching, Instruction, and Team Administration (50%)

Provide one-on-one or teach instruction on related skill development and critique, rules, technologies and strategies; Model and instruct student-athletes in departmental, College, Conference, and NCAA policies and procedures including Hood Honor Code, Alcohol Policy, Code of Conduct, Travel Policy, Conference bylaws and proceedings, and NCAA guidelines;Organize and conduct practices during the traditional season (as defined by the National Collegiate Athletic Association) for this sport. Non-traditional (or out of season) practices may be required;

Develop team travel and security plans in compliance with departmental and College guidelines for safety and other requirements;

Serve as the representative of the department and the College during team travel for in- and out-of-season competition. Supervise team during all travel, lead team during the event; Manage and account for team money distributed for meal and/or other expenses. Submit required forms and reports to Director of Athletics and Accounting Department;

esponsible for assisting in management of operational budget issues: participate in uniform and equipment purchase process; plan and coordinate team travel under the supervision of Director of Athletics’ Office; develop and implement fund-raising strategies;

Complete in-and off-season scheduling for the program. Work within NCAA guidelines regarding start of season, dates of competition and end of season;

Assure currency with NCAA regulations, Conference bylaws and proceedings, and departmental policies. Participate in NCAA and Conference meetings and voting procedures as appropriate;

Refer student-athletes to College resources as necessary to assist with academic, medical, and/or personal issues that may arise throughout the year;

Represent the Department of Athletics at all on-campus Admission Open Houses and/or other predetermined events;

Other duties as assigned by Director of Athletics.

Recruiting (40%)

Work with Liaison to Admission and Department of Admission to develop annual recruiting plan for identifying prospective student-athletes;

Work with Recruiting Coordinator and Department of Admission to recruit qualified student-athletes; both incoming freshmen and transfers, to Hood College; included are off-campus contacts and evaluations, as well as, serving as College representative during on-campus prospect visits;

Work closely with Sports Information Director to develop annual media plan that includes media guides, news releases, etc. for promotion of student-athletes, the team, and the College;

Respond to prospective student inquiries and maintain record of contacts.

Study Hall Coordinator (10%)

Set up study hall hours and locations. Publish hours to coaches and freshmen athletes;

Track student athlete study hall hours;

Email athletes and coaches if an athlete does not complete the required hours;

Maintain a list of game/match suspensions for athletes who receive three or more strikes.

  • Candidate should possess a strong commitment and ability to motivate, teach; counsel, and recruit academically qualified student-athletes;
  • Must have valid driver’s license



Bachelor’s degree and proven successful coaching, with 2-3 years’ experience preferred, preferably at the collegiate level or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience are required.  Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and regulations preferred.  Experience working with male student-athletes highly desirable.  Strong oral and written communication skills required.

Technology Skills 

Computer proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.  Proficient with internet and email. Ability to use available instructional technology resources to effectively teach in a manner conducive to classroom presentation including, but not limited to, use of audio visual equipment, computer, educational software, etc.

Language Skills                                                                     

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone.  Ability to develop marketing or promotion materials.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, or others.  Ability to teach individuals skills and team concept.

Mathematical Skills           

Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator. Ability to use mathematical concepts in developing reports, monitoring expenses, and creating a budget for events.

Reasoning Ability 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate
