Position Summary:  The Data Science Manager will:

  1. Lead on data collection, integration, modeling, analysis and visualization of Washington Spirit Performance, Medical, Technical and Research data.

  2. Create and develop in-house analyses to give insight that specifically aligns to the Department’s philosophy and objectives.

  3. Ensure integrated cutting-edge data analysis to enhance Performance and Medical support for Washington Spirit players.
  4. Support Washington Spirits philosophy and aims of developing women as women.

  5. Work in collaboration with the Technical, Medical and Performance Multi-Disciplinary Team.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create, implement and lead a strategy/centralized system to utilize data across the Performance, Medical and Research Innovation Department, and in collaboration with all other Departments, where appropriate. This system aims to provide support by implementing and monitoring optimal female health, wellbeing, recovery, physical profiling, strength and conditioning, training and match load monitoring, nutrition, psychology, and return to play strategies.

  • Lead in developing and maintaining the club’s athlete management system. 

  • Build and lead a centralized system that incorporates data from multiple internal and external sources, using strategic analysis to develop insightful and clear visualizations to support operations, answer performance and medical questions and to inform decision making.  

  • Use advanced mathematics and statistical modelling to develop sports performance metrics, determine key datasets and data streams to enable data driven and informed decision making in collaboration with the Director of Performance and Research Innovation and Director of Medical Services

  • Ensure the club stays innovative with new developments within data and technology. 

  • Translate complex statistical and analytical findings into language that allows them to be used effectively for data visualization and communication to a variety of audiences (i.e., technical staff, ownership, players, etc.).  

  • Facilitate the analytical needs of the Department, collaborate in the design of diagnostic solutions, and deliver outstanding data products and insights. 

  • Develop analytical concepts to craft an actionable story for technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Performance and Research Innovation, and Director of Medical to provide Multi-Disciplinary support by implementing and monitoring optimal female health, wellbeing, recovery, physical profiling, strength and conditioning, training and match load monitoring, nutrition, psychology, and return to play strategies.

  • Under the guidance of the Director of Performance and Research Innovation, and Director of Medical Services, collaborate with the Performance and Medical staff in the review, development and co-ordination of Applied Performance and Medical research projects, contributing to an evolving world leading High Performance support program.

  • Manage and mentor PhD students, undergraduate student volunteers, and interns. 

  • Attend and assist with workshops, in-service meetings, professional development courses/workshops and other development opportunities. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


You will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or a related field.

  • Master’s degree in Sports Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field preferred.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the field of sports analytics, or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides you with the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.

  • Competent computer literacy in terms of analytics and programming (i.e., R, Python, SQL)

  • Experience with machine learning or other artificial intelligence techniques preferred.

  • Outstanding use of data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Google, R shiny, etc.

  • Familiarity of using Performance data sources such as STATSports, Vald, Polar, Second Spectrum, and Electronic Medical Records, as well as experience with Athlete Management Systems (utilization of these data sources). 

  • Meticulous attention to detail in striving for 100 percent accuracy.

  • The ability to thrive under deadlines, and in a fast-paced environment.

  • Advanced and creative presentation skills.

  • Passion for the success of Women’s Professional Sports, innovation, research and an appetite for an exciting new sports landscape.

  • Enthusiastic and energetic team player, with experience working as part of a Multi-Disciplinary team.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and a high degree of emotional intelligence. 

  • A strong work ethic and friendly demeanor.

  • Good knowledge and tactical understanding of soccer preferred.

  • Possess exceptional organizational skills with a strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize/multi-task.

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including scheduled games that can/will be weekends, evenings and perhaps Holidays.
