Summary
San Jose Earthquakes are recruiting a Director, Soccer Analytics to help build and lead the club’s new Data & Analytics function, which will focus on leveraging data to drive insights that inform decision making across soccer operations, including: game model development, match analysis, player recruitment, and roster construction. The role will work closely with club executive leadership and soccer operations staff – and carry management responsibility for Data & Analytics team.
 
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead development and prioritization of key strategic initiatives for Data & Analytics group, working in collaboration with outside consultants, executive leadership, and soccer operations
  • Evaluate, select, and manage all club data infrastructure tools – including external data sources for event, tracking, and physical data
  • Execute detailed analyses to support soccer operations across key functional areas, such as development of game model, creation/execution of new player recruitment/evaluation system, match analysis, and biometric/performance planning.
  • Conduct research on latest trends across the soccer data/analytics space; develop new project ideas and assess their potential impact and feasibility
  • Help define Data & Analytics org structure and human capital needs; recruit, hire and manage Data & Analytics team, including full time and part time roles 
 
Education and Experience
  • College degree – preferably in statistics, computer science, mathematics or a related field
  • 5+ years of work experience in soccer analytics or related data/analytics role

 Required Skills
  • Deep experience working with and analyzing datasets – fluency with soccer-specific datasets and providers strongly preferred 
  • Experience building data visualizations using R, Python, or equivalent
  • Ability to effectively communicate/present conclusions (written or oral) from analyses to technical staff and club executive leadership 
  • Enthusiasm for learning new relevant skills related to programming, modeling, and visualization
  • Passion for soccer and soccer analytics – strong working knowledge of MLS preferred
  • Spanish language skills a plus
