About the Role
Football has become an integral part of The Athletic’s product and growth story. We launched our coverage of the Premier League in August 2019, and we have established ourselves as a major player in sports media and the authority on football journalism. We have grown to 95 journalists and editors covering international football, along with a headquarters team of 15. We are now looking to build out a full cross-functional UK-based product team to take the way we cover football in our app and website to the next level.
As the senior product manager leading this team, you will work closely with the GM and the Editor-in-Chief for the UK to develop the strategy for our football product, including how to best showcase the work of our world-class journalists and delight football fans all over the world. You’ll be responsible for developing a multi-quarter roadmap, keeping major football moments like the World Cup top of mind, and working with the team to execute against that roadmap. We are excited for you to come in and run - we see lots of room for growth in our football product, and there’s lots of opportunity and whitespace for an entrepreneurial product manager. 


    • Work with UK business and editorial leaders to define the strategy and vision for the football product and football fan user experience.
    • Identify initiatives - both large and small - that will move us toward that vision, improving our journalist and user experience at every step of the way.
    • Build a set of prioritized initiatives into a roadmap that balances long term and short term considerations and enables us to put our best foot forward for major events like the World Cup.
    • Execute on the product roadmap in collaboration with Design, Engineering, Marketing, Editorial, and other stakeholders.
    • Lead a highly collaborative, productive cross-functional working group that includes UK business and editorial representatives as well as Engineering and other functions. 
    • Work closely with the rest of the Product team to align initiatives and dependencies, so that we create a cohesive global product experience.
    • Communicate strategy and results to internal stakeholders.
    • Understand the competitive football media environment and stay on top of great user experiences.


    • 4+ years of relevant product management experience at a fast-growing consumer company (football-related is a plus).
    • High familiarity with and love for the game of football.
    • Experience leading cross-functional teams to deliver initiatives against both short and longer timelines.
    • Experience working with and coordinating a diverse set of stakeholders.
    • Comfort with data - analyzing data, deriving insights, and making data-driven decisions.
    • Experience developing great user experiences, and an ability to empathize with users.
    • Eagerness to try new things and learn - and a willingness to fail.
