Job Summary

The Director of Major & Individual Giving (henceforth, Director) plays a critical role in our fundraising program by directing all aspects of the individual giving program, including the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective and current donors. They also hold primary responsibility for donors in the $10K - $500K range. The Director will work closely with the executive team, Board Members, and a national network of volunteers to achieve the organization's fundraising goals. Travel is required.

 

Primary Relationships

The Director reports to the Chief Revenue Officer. They will supervise a manager-level position and they will have the support of a multi-faceted development team. They will also collaborate with the President & CEO and high‐level volunteers.

 

Performance Expectations

The Director will build/manage all aspects of individual and major giving and be responsible for stewarding the current portfolio of major donors, including doing annual donor visits and programming. The Director will have a proven track record of developing a robust pool of major donors.  This includes identifying, cultivating, and securing prospects; making direct, face-to-face solicitations, creating and implementing moves management plans, and maintaining a donor retention rate of at least 80 percent.

 

Responsibilities

  • Execute the organization’s major and individual giving fundraising activities.
  • Present funding opportunities to donors/prospects in support of the organization’s overall

mission, programs, and other initiatives that may arise.

  • Oversee individual giving activities. Ensure that strategies are compatible with other existing initiatives and appeals.
  • Establish, manage, and serve as the key liaison for Foundation regional leadership councils and other influential groups.
  • Schedule donor calls and meetings, engage donors and prospects, solicit and close major gifts.
  • Support the fundraising efforts of high‐level volunteers, including the Board of Directors,

and senior team in securing new and renewed gifts—and include them in efforts to secure

larger gifts, as necessary.

  • Utilize wealth screening and other research information to develop strategies and build

the portfolio.

  • Work with the Development team to design strategies and events that build the pipeline.
  • Leverage donor events, such as private house parties and fundraisers, annual Foundation events, and regional leadership councils.
  • Track and report on the progress of goals to the Chief Revenue Officer, including contacts, proposals, gifts, pledges, and cash‐flow projections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • BA degree or equivalent experience and at least 3 years of leadership experience.
  • Direct experience managing fundraising portfolios with demonstrated success in closing gifts in the $10K ‐ $500K range.
  • Ability to build and manage a donor portfolio.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally with volunteers, colleagues, and donors.
  • Demonstrated track record in designing and implementing a successful individual giving program that both generates ongoing revenue and serves as a pipeline for major donors.
  • Self‐motivated with a high level of energy.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff, and to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced nonprofit environment.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with donor databases (Salesforce preferred).
  • Strong sense of fundraising ethics and respect for the confidentiality of donor information.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and balance the demands of travel, identifying new prospects, and stewarding existing donors.
  • Minimum Education of a Bachelor’s Degree is required.
