The Role: 

Primarily responsible for leading and delivering the Academy’s Psychology provision, this role will oversee the Academy working group that manages complex performance and wellbeing cases, while coordinating and driving the Academy’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Action Plan to support holistic player development.

Key Responsibilities:
 

  • Support Heads of Function in the development, implementation, and ongoing review of the Academy strategy, ensuring alignment across all departments.
  • Collaborate closely with the Academy Performance Department to contribute to the development, delivery, and evaluation of the Academy Performance strategy.
  • Lead the design, delivery, and continuous evaluation of the Academy Psychology Strategy, providing effective line management, as well as professional and personal development support to academy psychologist(s).
  • Work collaboratively with Coaching and Performance staff to enhance all aspects of player development through the integration of psychological principles.
  • Contribute to the creation, implementation, and monitoring of multi-disciplinary Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for players aged U17–U21.
  • Provide regular reports and reviews at phase meetings to the Academy Director and Heads of Player Development, tracking the progress and development of all registered Academy players.
  • Partner with coaches and support staff to embed psychological skill development within the technical and tactical coaching programme.
  • Support the Academy Coach Development Manager in delivering psychologically informed coach development initiatives.
  • Oversee and be accountable for the bi-annual psychological screening of all registered players aged U17–U21, and others as required.
  • Deliver high-quality psychological support and education through workshops, group sessions, and confidential one-to-one consultations for players and parents where appropriate.
  • Lead and coordinate the Academy MU-APS working group, taking responsibility for the management of complex cases relating to performance and/or wellbeing.
  • Actively engage in continuous professional development, maintain HCPC registration, and remain up to date with current research and best practice in the field.
  • Support and contribute to Academy recruitment processes and the club’s approach to talent identification.
  • Foster and contribute to a positive, inclusive, and high-performance environment that supports player development and wellbeing.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with players, demonstrating genuine care for their individual development in line with Club values and Academy philosophy.
  • Undertake any additional duties as required by the Head of Academy Performance, Academy Director, or Technical Board.

 
The Person: 

  • BSc (Hons) and MSc in Psychology/Sport Psychology (or equivalent).
  • Professional qualification (BPS QSEP, BASES SEPAR, or HCPC-approved Doctorate).
  • HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Typically 5 years’ plus relevant experience in elite sport academy/development environments.
  • Experience in professional football or elite youth sport, with knowledge of the EPPP framework.
  • Experience working within MDTs and applying psychology at both individual and system levels.
  • Ability to integrate psychology into coaching practice.
  • Passion for youth development.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and high-performance environments.
  • Belief in sport as a tool for personal development.
  • Safeguarding training.
  • Full UK driving licence.
