Job Purpose:
To lead the Grounds Maintenance Department and be responsible for the planning, maintenance, and development of all playing surfaces and associated grounds at Fleetwood Town Football Club, including Highbury Stadium and Poolfoot Farm. The Head Groundsman will ensure all facilities are maintained to the highest professional standards to support first-team, academy, and community activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain the highest quality of playing surfaces across both Highbury Stadium and Poolfoot Farm training complex.
- Preparation of annual report to the Chief Operating Officer in respect of annual pitch renovation proposals each summer, including proposal of works required to each pitch/area in line with the Club’s budgets.
- Manage matchday pitch preparations including marking, mowing, and overall presentation.
- Monitor pitch usage and implement strategies to minimise wear and tear.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of grounds staff across both sites.
- Create work schedules and delegate tasks to ensure coverage and efficiency.
- Support staff training and continuous professional development.
- Operate and maintain all grounds machinery and equipment to a high standard.
- Maintain a regular servicing schedule and report any equipment issues promptly.
- Manage budgets for consumables, machinery, and external contractors.
- Maintenance of the 4G pitch facility at Poolfoot Farm.
- Ensure all practices comply with relevant health and safety regulations.
- Conduct regular risk assessments across both locations.
- Maintain records of chemical applications, servicing, and training.
- Act as the primary contact for the club on all grounds-related matters.
- Liaise with coaching staff to coordinate pitch availability and schedules.
- Provide pitch condition reports and weather forecasts as required.
- Identify and implement sustainable practices in grounds management.
- Remain up to date with industry innovations, technology, and best practices.
- Travel between Highbury Stadium and Poolfoot Farm is required.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Minimum of NVQ Level 3 in Sports Turf Management or equivalent.
- Proven experience managing professional sports pitches, ideally football.
- Understanding of drainage and irrigation systems.
- Excellent knowledge of sports turf maintenance machinery and techniques.
- Strong leadership and team management experience.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and matchdays.
Desirable:
- Experience working within a professional football club environment.
- PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates.
